Sister M. Rose Angela Muskala, OSF - December 24, 1925 - August 15, 2011
Sylvania Franciscan Sister M. Rose Angela Muskala died on August 15, 2011 at Rosary Care Center in Sylvania, Ohio where she had lived as a resident since 2007. The daughter of Albert and Rose Muskala, she was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She professed her first vows as a Sister of St. Francis on August 18, 1945 and her final vows on August 18, 1948. Sister Rose Angela spent most of her 66 years in religious life in the teaching ministry at the elementary and high school levels.
She taught in elementary schools in Rossford, Ohio and Wyandotte, Michigan before she moved on into teaching math at the high school level. Sister Rose Angela was one of the four pioneer Sylvania Franciscans who taught at Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School in Oregon, Ohio when it opened in 1961. She left for a 9 year stint at St. Ladislaus High School in Hamtramck, Michigan where she taught math and English and was principal for one year and then returned to Stritch Catholic for 17 years of service as a math teacher, alumni office worker, substitute teacher and tutor. She retired from Stritch Catholic in 2007 and was given a grand retirement party by the faculty, staff and students.
In her younger days, Sister Rose Angela received a BA degree in Math from St. Teresa College in Winona, Minnesota and a MA in Teaching Math from the University of Detroit in Detroit, Michigan. She was inducted into the Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School Hall of Fame in 1995 and was honored in October of 2010 by the Stritch Catholic community when they named the former convent on their campus The Sister Rose Angela Education Center. Though she had had some significant health problems before that event, Sister Rose Angela was happy and proud to be present for the honor bestowed upon her for her love and loyalty and many years of service at Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School.
Those who knew Sister Rose Angela best remember her as a "great lady." She was a top fundraiser for the high school and seemed to always have raffle tickets to sell for some event. She often went out of her way to help students, even staying after school to tutor or come in on a Saturday to help someone prepare for a math exam. In her later years, Sister Rose Angela offered many prayers and her own suffering for the many people who had requested her prayers. She will be missed by her sister, Sister Marie Muskala, OSF, her niece, Sister St. Anthony Chrzanak, OSF, and her special friend, Sister Serra Minier, OSF along with all the Sylvanian Franciscan Sisters, family members and friends. |
