Students at Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School and St. Kateri Catholic Academy collected more than 1,300 items for residents at Little Sisters of the Poor.

During the week of Feb. 22, pre-kindergarteners through high school seniors collected basic items such as paper towels, soap and shampoo for residents at the residential home for elder clergymen and women. The schools have been holding this collection for more than five years. This is the most items students have collected.

Students in St. Kateri Catholic Academy received a health lesson during their final week of school before the Christmas holiday. But it wasn’t in your typical health class that students learned about what they are eating.

Professionals from Promedica came to SKCA and setup multiple stations in the cafeteria to teach students about a variety of healthy habits. Some of those healthy habits include exercise, avoiding sugar and what to eat at each meal.

Students in grades 1 through 4 participated in the event.

With Christmas just around the corner, students in kindergarten through second grade were paid a visit by Mrs. Claus on Monday, Dec. 14. It was a friendly reminder for students that Christmas is almost here, but it is still important to be on your best behavior.

Mrs. Claus asked students about a variety of things, including if they had been good this year, what they were doing to prepare for Christmas and where all the snow is this winter.

Destiny Martinez, a fourth grader at St. Kateri Catholic Academy, collected more than 500 hats and gloves for the needy in the Toledo Area this year.

For the past two years, Destiny Martinez has forgone the traditional route of receiving gifts for her birthday. She has instead requested that friends and relatives make donations to local charities.

Students in St. Kateri Catholic Academy had the please of seeing the Kaze No Dachi Taiko preform their drum routine in the school gym. When the group preforms, it is always a high-energy performance with an array of drum routines.

In addition, Jordan Sapara, an alum of Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School, is part of the group and also preformed.

The group preformed for students in kindergarten through 8th grade. It gave students the opportunity to see a cultural difference in how music is preformed around the world.

Kaze No Daichi Taiko is Bowling Green State University's premier semi-pro Japanese taiko group. The style of group drumming that is preformed is known as kumi daiko.

St. Kateri Catholic Schools welcomed the newest member of its staff on Monday, Nov. 16, but it is not your typical staff member.

Violet, a 2-year-old Chocolate Labrador Retriever, is a school therapy dog and will be at the school five days a week. She was trained for roughly 22 months by Assistance Dogs for Achieving Independence (ADAI) – which has a location in Toledo – and is now considered a fulltime staff member of the school.

The Diocese of Toledo recently recognized Tim Malone, the Principal Emeritus at St. Kateri Catholic Schools, for his exceptional leadership in Catholic schools by awarding him the John A. Thomas Leadership Award.

The Diocese presents the award annually to an administrator who displays outstanding leadership as a Catholic School principal. The winner must have at least 10 years of experience as a principal.
